Subject: EMERGENCY – Please shutdown or remove computers from network

Sorry for the odd email, but there is a security outbreak that is infecting
computers on the network, so we are requesting that you have all users in
your department remove their computers from the campus wired network
IMMEDIATELY.

We haven’t heard of issues on wireless networks or Macs getting infected -
only Windows machines.

Klingt ja gefährlich, und wenn die Mädels und Jungs von der Informatik das Problem nicht innerhalb von 10 Minuten gelöst haben, sondern campusweite Leute rumlaufen müssen um Computerkabel aus der Netzwerksteckdose zu ziehen, umso mehr Grund zur Beunruhigung. Gut, dass ich einen Mac hab, dachte ich mir mal wieder.

Der Tag war überaus kommunikativ. Am Gang standen ProfessorInnen rum, die, da sie keine Emails checken konnten, einfach mal mit den AssistentInnen vom Nebenraum konversierten. Teaching Assistants konnten keine Arbeitsblätter aus dem e-Folder downloaden und mussten daher mit ihren Studis spontan reden. Und alle fragen sich: was ist das wohl für ein Virus, der so schnell und erbarmungslos einen ganzen Campus lahmlegen kann? Mac BenutzerInnen googelten zwar stolz und wichtig, konnten aber auch nichts herausfinden.

So verging der Tag, bis dann am Abend die erhellende Nachricht kam:

Subject: Faculty, student machines

Well, after working on this issue most of the day, and after finally fining out what the problem was (bad definition file from McAfee, not a virus) I am just going to suggest that everybody just go ahead and turn the computers on.

I thought it was funny. No wonder Macs were not affected…
